2018 Persuasive Technology Conference: Proposal Submission

Paper

A paper submission is suitable for original research that is completed at the time of submission and, regardless of the length of the paper, are self-sufficient scientific contributions. Papers can be full papers (12 pages max., including all) or short papers (6 pages max., including all) in Springer LNCS format, and should describe work that is not presented, published, or simultaneously submitted elsewhere.

Submitted papers will be peer-reviewed by the review committee.  When accepted, a camera ready version of the paper must be submitted before the deadline. Accepted papers will be included in the conference proceedings and devoted a time slot for oral presentation. At least one author per submission is required to register before the end of the early registration period and be present at the conference. Inclusion in the proceedings is conditional upon successful registration.

Note: If your paper is accepted, please read the following information carefully before submitting your camera ready version!

All papers accepted for publication in LNCS should strictly adhere to the layout characteristics that can be found on http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0 (there are various templates here that can be of assistance). In addition, for each paper, a Consent to Publish needs to be filled out completely and signed, and this needs to be sent together with the photo-ready (final) version of the paper. Please use the prefilled Consent to Publish form posted here.


 

Poster

A poster submission is suitable for descriptions of small studies/experiences, of project outlines, or of work in progress. Authors should submit a 2-page abstract (including references).

Make sure your poster submission follows the formatting guidelines that are described in the Poster Template.

Posters will be displayed and presented during a dedicated session of the conference. Accepted posters will be included in the adjunct conference proceedings. Yet inclusion in the adjunct proceedings is conditional upon successful registration. Poster presenters are required to register before the end of the early registration period and be present at the conference in order to describe the content to viewers.

Workshop

Workshops provide avenues for attendees with common interests to exchange and discuss their ideas about a particular topic that would contribute to advancing the field of Persuasive Technology in general. They provide an opportunity for interactive discussions that would move the field forward and facilitate community building around a particular topic of interest. Persuasive workshops might address any aspect of persuasive technology as highlighted in the conference page.

Approved workshops will be announced on the website. They will take place during a half- or full-day session before the conference, on April 17th, 2018. Apart from the physical and virtual space in the workshop venue, all aspects of tutorials and workshops are the responsibility of the session’s organizers (e.g. adjunct proceedings, schedule, review, promotion, supporting material).

Submission Format: Springer LNCS format (no more than 4 pages), including Background, Organizers, Link to Website, Workshop Structure, Anticipated Outcome, and References. Accepted proposals will be given a time slot, conditional upon successful registration of the organizers before the end of the early registration period.

Workshop proposals are peer-reviewed and are highly selective. In the previous year, less than 30% of workshop proposals were accepted. Workshop proposals will be selected by a team of juries. Acceptance decisions will be based on an assessment of how compelling the workshop is likely to be for Persuasive Technology attendees: scientific quality, relevance to the main conference theme, ability to generate interesting discussion and useful outcome, and ability to attract a reasonable number of participants.

Symposium

A Symposium is a 60-minute presentation by 3-4 individuals who address a common theme or topic. A minimum of 15 minutes should be reserved for questions from the audience and dialogue among presenters. It is recommended that a symposium includes presenters from at least two different institutions.

Submissions should include a general overview of the session of max. 500 words and an individual abstract of each presenter within the symposium, including their affiliation, of max. 500 words each. Submissions can be sent to symposium@persuasivetechnology.eu.

Accepted symposia will be included in the adjunct conference proceedings. Yet inclusion in the adjunct proceedings is conditional upon successful registration.

Demo

If you want to demonstrate a piece of persuasive technology during the demo session so that attendees can try and interact with it, please submit a max. 2-page description to demo@persuasivetechnology.eu, including the authors, a description of the system and its purpose, its status of implementation and deployment, the contents of the demo to be shown at the conference, and the equipment. If you want to show a commercial product, then you might be asked to pay an exhibition fee.

Demo presenters need to bring their working demo and the hardware on which it runs (laptop, mobile phone, …) themselves. Accepted demos will be presented during a dedicated session of the conference, conditional upon successful registration before the end of the early registration period.

Doctoral Consortium

On April 16, 2018, the Doctoral Consortium of Persuasive Technology 2018 will take place, right before the PT2018 conference.The Doctoral Consortium is a special session of the conference where Ph.D. students in the early phases of their research can receive advice in a constructive atmosphere. Students present and discuss their research with other Ph.D. students and a panel of established researchers in the area of persuasive technology.

Students interested in participating in the Doctoral Consortium should submit a 2-page abstract, describing their research question(s), its position with respect to the state of the art, their research plans and methodology, ideas, and results achieved so far.

Accepted abstracts will be included in the Doctoral Consortium session after successful registration. The panel of established researchers will read these abstracts, and after a Ph.D. student’s presentation (closely linked to the abstract), the panel will give the Ph.D. student feedback on scientific contributions, future directions, methodology, etc.

Tutorials/Viewpoint Papers

Tutorials and viewpoint papers are intended to help people attending the conference organize a related scientific meeting on a specific topic or instruct on a specific practice. Apart from the physical and virtual space in the workshop venue, all aspects of tutorials and workshops are the responsibility of the session’s organizers (e.g., proceedings, schedule, review, promotion, supporting material).

If you want to organize a tutorial or viewpoint paper session, please submit a proposal as a 4-page description including the name of the organizers, the components of the committee, a description of the topic, motivation, organization, expected outcome, and supporting materials. Upon approval, the tutorial/ viewpoint paper session will be devoted a dedicated space on the conference website, conditional upon successful registration of the organizers before the end of the early registration period.

Accepted tutorial sessions will require a minimum of 15 registered attendees to stay in the program. Presenters will receive 50% of the proceedings from the registration fees for their tutorial session. The presenters, with the support of the Persuasive Technology 2018 committee, will be encouraged to recruit for their tutorial sessions.

All types of submissions must be written in English. All types of submissions, except papers, should be sent electronically as pdf files to the appropriate submission emails outlined above. Paper submissions must be uploaded via this link: https://ocs.springer.com/ocs/home/Persuasive2018. Attention will be paid in the reviewing process to originality, technical soundness, quality of writing, ethics, validation, and connections with other work in the domain of persuasive technology. To support the blind review process of long and short papers, submissions need to be anonymous. Names and affiliations must be removed from the title page, excessive self-citation in the bibliography must be kept to a minimum and citation to the authors’ previous work in the text body must be in the third person (e.g. avoiding “As we described in [1], …” and using instead “As <Author Name> described in [1]).

When accepted a camera ready version of the paper (as .pdf) including source files (e.g., .doc, .docx or LaTeX files) must be submitted. At least one author per submission is required to register before the end of the early registration period and be present at the conference. Inclusion in the proceedings is conditional upon successful registration.
